Paper and Wood Sculptures by Zack Mclaughlin

Barn Owl

Arctic Turn

Zack Mclaughlin is a children's book illustrator and a sculptor based in London. His life size sculptures of birds and owls are hand made with wood and paper. The barn owl sculpture shown above is simply stunning!

From the artist's website about the barn owl: "The body and legs are carved out of wood, the feet and eyes are made from clay and the wing and tail feathers are made from watercolour paper with wire for structure. Then I paint the body, face and feet with acrylic paints before coating the whole owl with a few coats of matte varnish to protect from dust and discoloration." The whole process of meticulously putting together the masterpiece took over 100 painstaking hours.

He also creates one-of-a-kind beautiful wall lights that'll make a great statement piece for your home. Take a look at his online store and if you have an idea, Zack will be glad to make something custom for you. He can be contacted through his website and if you want to get updates on his new work, join him on Facebook.

Kandice Keith

Taking Charge & Jed

Letting Go

Kandice Keith is a contemporary acrylic painter currently living in Squamish, BC. She started painting with acrylics in 2002 but she was always passionate about the art since her childhood.

She attended numerous workshops and observed other artists to make progress in her work. "It seemed to open a new door for me, my movements became more intuitive, and instinctive - each brushstroke requiring intention. Ultimately I was able to become more detached from the outcome, allowing me to take bigger risks. In the past I was overworking my pieces and now I was able to bring them to conclusion.  My favorite moment being at the end of a piece when I define their personality and character by finishing my subject's eyes."

Her artwork is inspired by her daily surroundings such as birds and even bears that are not unusual for her to see in her yard, and cows that she can hear in her home studio from a farm next door. To view more of her artwork you can visit Daily Paintworks.

The Owl and the Pussycat Illustrated by Barbara Cooney

Hello friends, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. How about we start our week with the lovely The Owl and the Pussycat illustrations by Barbara Cooney first published by Little Brown & Co. 1969.

I really like the simple illustrations created with dark flowing lines that are brought to life with the interesting color palette of green, lime, white and aqua blue. We are all familiar with the story/poem of this odd couple (blogged here) which I find fun to re-read with different illustration styles by talented artists such as Barbara Cooney. Do you have a favorite illustrator of the book?
