Stunning Menagerie by Melissa Townsend

Melissa Townsend is originally from Alberta who later moved to Canadian East Coast. She gained her Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts at the NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in 2005. She paints menagerie of creatures - deer, fox, birds, buffalo and her signature owls. She is also known as an "owl lady" for painting stunning owl portraits. When I set my eyes on her owl painting I was instantly drawn in the by its whimsy. She uses mediums like oils and watercolors to paint on a solid background with visible and forceful strokes, and dripping paint that travels off of the canvas.

Melissa's shares here about the owl series: "The owl/bird paintings come from a place of desiring freedom in life. A freedom to be and to exist with purpose, with great delight, even when suffering comes. Opportunity to discover the depths of who you are, your potential, and your biggest dreams. Freedom that speaks to the profoundness of endurance, and not giving up. Not so long ago somebody said this to me: "on the other side of pain is break-through." I have realized this to be a true statement."

Her paintings are in private collections of actors, musicians, writers and art appreciators all around the globe.

Birds That'll Look Perfect on your Sofa

Bess Betty is an illustrator and a creator living in Oakland, CA. She got a degree in studio art from UC Berkeley and founded her own brand Bird vs Bird in 2014 to share her bird illustrations.

Bird vs. Bird grew out of her desire to keep stuff out of the trash. She started off with handmaking purses and other small accessories reusing the scraps. Over the years, her business grew and she expanded her product range by adding handmade home decor and gift items for bird lovers. The series of bird cushions offer all kind of bird designs from great horned owl, barn owl, steller's jay, chickadee, quail, raven, hummingbird and more. She gets inspiration for her work from photos in bird books and observing them in nature. All the products at made by the artist in her home studio and are based on her original illustrations. You can find all of her bird cushions in large and small size in her online store.

Firelight: Fabric Collection by Cotton + Steel

images via

Firelight is a fabric collection designed for Cotton + Steel in collaboration with artists Melody Miller, Alexia Abegg, Sarah Watts and Rashida Coleman Hale. The fabric features bold motifs of hootie owls and a rose garden that are in perfect contrast with small acorns, ginko leaves and tiny moons. The color palette of warm, golden yellows inspired by fall reminds one of walks in the wood on a crisp evening, beautiful sunsets and cozy nights in front of the fire.

It's a perfect time to grab some of the designs now for your Autumn themed project. All the fabrics from the collection can be found here and here.

Fairies Riding Woodland Creatures Felted Into Sculptures by Phoebe Capelle

Phoebe Capelle is the sculpture and doll designer, and maker behind Lavender & Lark. The self-taught artist grew up in an artistic household where her father was an illustrator and animator. When she started to travel, she learnt about many traditional art forms of different countries. She studied the art of needlework with the gypsy women in Karnataka, India; Thanka painting in the Indian Himalayas; and weaving in Tibet.

She has combined all what she has learnt over the years in making of these stunning dolls. She hand stitches dolls using natural fibers like wool and antique fabric. The tiny features are hand embroidered, the accessories such as miniature boots are hand painted. It can take over fifty hours to complete a set of a bird and a fairy. Fairies, owls, and hares are a recurring theme in her work. Her fairies are often seen riding their companion animal in the wild. Her photography is just as beautiful as her work that brings her sculptures to life. To see more of her work go to her gallery on her website and Instagram.

Gauche Paintings by Matte Stephens

It's been a while since I shared the amazing work of Matte Stephens. New Hampshire based artist makes paintings with great modern design and charming retro style. He loves mid 20th century industrial and graphic design such as the work of Charles and Ray Eames, Alexander Girard, George Nelson/Irving Harper and artists like Ben Shahn and Paul Klee. His quirky characters and cities are painted in muted colors and have humor to them. "I love light-hearted subjects. I try to stay away from anything with angst in it. To me, life is tough enough, so adding to it with disturbing images just seems a little silly to me" via here

He has a very impressive list of clients including Tiffany & CO, American Express, Herman Miller, Uppercase, Jonathan Adler, Oxford University Press, Chronicle Books and Disney to name a few. He has shown his work at the places like Office PDX, Together Gallery, Outre Gallery, Cheeky B, Nahcotta, Bear and Bird Gallery, Alphabets, Renegade Craft Fair shop, Velocity Art and Design, Reform School, Rare Device, Super 7, Subtext, Nucleus and Jonathan Adler. His work has been featured all over the internet on several blogs and websites.

You can find the artist's originals and limited edition prints in his online store.
