Surreal Japanese Painter Chie Yoshii

Chie Yoshii is a painter born in Japan currently living in California. She specializes in creating surrealistic oil paintings inspired by human psychology and mythological tales. “I am inspired by the analogy between mythological tales and the human psychology. In my paintings, layers of allegorical images create syncretic, dreamlike worlds. A profusion of symbols forces the representational images to be abstract as a whole, allowing the viewers to create their own personal interpretations.”

In 2000, she completed BFA at Massachusetts College of Art and studied for 6 years with realist painter Adrian Gottlieb from 2002-2008. She is an admirer of vibrant colors and details of Flemish painters such as Jan van Eyck and Caravaggio. She was also influenced by the captivating mythic world of Gustave Moreau. Her paintings feature celestial women figures accompanied by owl, birds, and butterflies in saturated colored images in the surrounding that are far from reality. The softness, texture and illuminous quality in her work is impeccable.

Her paintings have been exhibited in galleries all over the world including Dorothy Circus Gallery in Italy, Urban Nation in Germany, Thinkspace in Los Angeles, and William Baczek Fine Arts in Northampton, MA.
