Printable Origami Woodland Animal Bookmarks

We know it's a perfect day if we can get a few hours to cuddle with a book. When I was young, I was taught by my mom how bending the corners of a page of book is a sin. She made me use bookmarks early on and I am so glad that it was one many useful things I learnt from her.

I figured any kid who is learning to take care of their books can be introduced to the art of using bookmarks with this adorable tutorial by Autumn. Origami woodland animal bookmarks will be loved by the kids, they will have a great time making their favorite animal and use it to mark the page in the book. There are seven designs - owl, fox, skunk, bear, bunny, chick and raccoon. Each animal comes with a printable template and a set of instructions to make your own origami bookmark. To download go to It's always Autumn.

Bird Portraits Painted by Wild Bird Rehabilitator

Ashley Dietrich is a painter based out of Tulsa, OK. She earned BFA in Studio Art and Art History, and completed graduate studies in Biocultural Anthropology and Archaeology. She now runs a bird sanctuary and is also a full-time painter who paints bird portraits mainly pigeons and owls. Her work is rich in textures, patterns and inspired by the nature surrounding her studio.

"Birds are each unique individuals with their own personalities, and I am honored to be part of so many little lives. Capturing their gestures and the complexity of feathers is a fulfilling technical challenge, but I especially enjoy creating portraits. Painting allows me to work with wild birds as well as spend time with my own little flock. I share my studio with ringneck doves."

You can visit her online store for originals and limited edition 4x4 bird portraits.

Textured Portraits of Animals and People Created With Punch Needle Embroidery

A few weeks ago, I made an attempt at punch needle embroidery for a small personal project. I have to confess it wasn't easy for someone like me who had never worked with the tool ever before. It took me a while to get used to the working of the needle on fabric. But once I got the rhythm going, the process quickly became fun and meditative.

Studio Myome creates whimsical illustrations using punch needle and yarn which has different result than embroidering with thread. The use of yarn brings beautiful texture to the portraits of people and animals ensuring the end result in not flat. Have you worked with punch needle? How was your experience?
