Piñata Inspired Paper Bird Sculptures by Roberto Benavidez

Roberto Benavidez was born and raised in South Texas and is presently living in Los Angeles. In 2009, he professionally started to work as a sculptor and made a piñata as his very first project. Over the years, his art has become more intricate and complex. He crafts paper bird sculptures inspired by the traditional craft of piñata making.

"I was intrigued by the idea of taking the piñata form, something seen as cheap and disposable, and moving it into the arena of fine art. I feel that my sculptural forms and fringing techniques set my work apart from what most people think of as a typical piñata and the themes are more complex than is typical."

His piñatas consists of multiple layers of different colored papers and have lovely texture. Birds are often the primary subject matter in his work, however Benavidez has also crafted other creatures, sugar skull and even painting piñatas.
