Assemblages Created With Wood and Ceramics

Mixed media artist Shirley Vauvelle is nationally and internationally becoming an established British maker. She creates unique contemporary assemblages using ceramic, driftwood, wire and vintage maps. Inspiration for her work comes from Danish and Scandinavian design and mid 20th century ceramists like Aldo Londi, and painters such as Amedeo Modigliani and Frida Kahlo.

Her pieces are wall hung or freestanding sculptures are decorated with handmade owls, birds and flowers in white earthenware creating a narrative. "These are built up with layers of color and texture over a long period of time until the right feel and balance is achieved." Her work has been featured in magazines both in the UK and America. Her pieces are shown in galleries all across the country, and collected in the UK and overseas. Not only that, Shirley’s work has been featured on Homes by the Sea, Series 2 episode 2.
