Susan Hipgrave graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design and worked for two decades as an art director in advertising. In 2005,  when she walked into a painting class the Sydney-based artist discovered her true passion for painting on porcelain. She calls it her preferred "canvas" which she decorates with wildlife and botanical drawings inspired by her collection of natural history books.

Susan hand paints every plate with intricately detailed subject matter in monochromatic black and white color scheme using a fine hairline brush.

‘When I’m contemplating a new piece, I start by going through my collection of natural history books until I find something that “speaks” to me. I work with it in terms of size and placement, and then begins the slow and meditative practice of putting paint to porcelain. I obsess about how fine a line I can do; ultimately, I love seeing all the little black lines that I’ve painted come together to create an image.’- via.
